“We’ve been loving reading African tales, and Handa’s Surprise is always a favourite at home and in the classroom.

This beautifully illustrated story follows Handa as she sets off to visit her friend Akeyo, carrying a basket of delicious fruit on her head… but on the way, cheeky animals have their own ideas! 🐒🍌

To bring the story to life, I found my Talk 4 Writing story map I’d made a while back and we retold the tale with our @yellow_door_education wooden characters. We explored the different fruits, tasted a selection, and even made our own fruit kebabs. Later, we sequenced the animals using our number stones, and then innovated the story by swapping in new fruits for the animals to take. Of course, little one had to try being Handa too—balancing the basket on his head was the highlight! 🧺🍊🍍🍌

🎯 Storytelling play and early Talk for Writing activities like these build:

🌿Oral language skills – children internalise story patterns and vocabulary.
🌿Sequencing and memory – retelling helps them understand story structure.
🌿Creativity – innovating the tale encourages imaginative thinking.
